Rider News

South Bucks RDA rider, Sophie Christiansen, receives her M.B.E. at Windsor Castle. Photograph is copyright Getty Images, 2009.

Following on from her Paralympic successes, Sophie Christiansen was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire), in the 2009 New Years Honours, for services to sport. We are very proud of Sophie's acknowledgment.

Anna Gill has successfully gained a place on the start and potential squad, for Paralympic Dressage Sports riders, this means that as well as riding at South Bucks, she will be putting in many extra hours riding, attending training at the Unicorn Centre, Gloucestershire and is now also committed to compete regularly.

Staff News

Clive Milkins, Group Stable Manager and Chief Instructor, has been awarded the Buckinghamshire Sports Board, Coach of the Year Award 2008, for the efforts that he has put in will all the sports riders at South Bucks and especially the training programme he provided for Sophie, enabling such a success last year.

Fundraising

Do any of you have unwanted Christmas presents cluttering up your home? Please bring them in for us to use as tombola prizes. All donations can be left in the classroom.

We are registered with Just Giving where you can easily pass on donations for any sponsorship you or your friends undertake for the group.

We would like to thank the Physiotherapy Students from Brunel University who ran in the Bristol Half Marathon raising money for the group.

We are collecting Tesco Vouchers again this year, we have a few hundred banked from last year, so hopefully we will, with YOUR help get enough to get more activity equipment for the younger riders. Please put your vouchers in the box on the gallery. Thank you.

Helper Training

Several helpers have indicated that they would like to hone their skills as helpers. We are going to hold a series of 6 'Training Tuesdays' from 24th Feb. Each evening session will cover one topic. You are welcome to come along for all sessions or pick the ones that are of most interest to you. Each session will start at 7pm and last 1-1/2 hours, they will be led by Clive, assisted by volunteer instructors.

Pony News

Patch at work.

We currently have 19 horses/ponies on site at Fulmer. Each one has a special job within the group. Over the next few newsletters we plan to tell you about some of them.

Patch, a 13.2hh skewbald pony, is a core member of the RDA Pony Team. He arrived at South Bucks RDA when his young rider outgrew him. Not liking to travel, he stays at Fulmer working in many of the classes. He is a very competitive pony and enjoys 'race-time' during the morning sessions. As he loves grass, we have to be careful in the spring and summer to make sure he does not each too much, so we often have to bribe him with a carrot to come in and give his tummy a rest! His best pony friend is Charlie.

Sadly at the beginning of the year we had to say good bye to Monty, who had become an established member of the group, starting many sports riders on their championship dreams.
